Last year I gave a friend a meal with roast beetroot as one of the veg and she said "if beetroot tastes this good why do people put vinegar on it"

my OH won't eat it but I do - love it baked whole in the oven. Turns everything red tho - and I mean everything, as I found out after eating it for the first time (a great big beetroot with my tea) and then later went to the smallest room in the house.... nuff said

You should make your OH at least try some of your own grown beetroot. Personally I don't like any root vegetables ( I grow them for my OH ;) ), but last year I tried a carrot I grew ( only grew the one, she's not that special ), and it was the first one I didn't spit out in disgust. This year ( so far ), I tried a beetroot and whilst I still didn't like it, it tasted weaaaaay better than any of the shop bought ones I've ever been forced to eat in my lifetime.

Not looking forward to the turnips and parsnips I'm growing for her, but determined to at least try them and hoping to be as "pleasantly" ( loosely used ) surprised ;)

Par boil and roast the parsnips in a little oil and honey.  Par boil and roll in grated parmesan then roast.  Use a potato peeler and deep fry shavings for parsnip crisps.  You will be converted, I promise. ;)
Cheese makes everything better.

Guess I'd better spark off a second parsnip, just in case I get converted? :O

One of the few thing that cooks really well in the microwave. Leave baby beets whole with 1 inch of stalks still attached put in bowl with a little water in microwave for 15 mins. The skins then rub off easily. Delicious - and quick.

I stir fry the green tops - just like chard. Frugal.......

Just finished my early beetroot harvest from greenhouse border - tomatoes and aubergines in now.

Thanks too bigbird - my oven door has just broken and I was wondering how to "roast" them - so I'll give the microwave a go  ;)

Just tried some of my better halfs beetroot she cooked up yesterday and its not something that floats my boat really.   They are about 2 inch across and look so much better than they taste.
Thanks
Kris

Just boiling my first beetroots  :) cant wait to taste in an hour.

I picked 2 tonight as couldn wait and wanted to try some, they are about 4cm across small i know but i got plenty.

What i would like to know is whats size is the best size to crop them? and would they go all woody like radishes if left in?

My variety in Woodan, wont be long now till they ready mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Cheers MW.

Well you can't leave it like that - how did they taste ?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
