storing new/early potatoes
« on: May 29, 2009, 10:01 »
is it possible to store 1st and 2nd earlies? I'm going to have far too many to eat at once (as i got carried away ordering, and then we were given some more). if I put in them in a sack or cardboard box under the stairs or in shed?

also read something about burying tatties in a box of sand underground - anyone tried that successfully? if so, how long will they keep for?

Spuds need to be kept in the dark and cool.
With first earlies why not just dig them up as and when they are required.

I store all mine in hessian sacks - somewhere cool and dark - and they should keep fine. I've still got a few of last year's Pentland Javelin left althought they've all sprouted again.

I'm worried about the slugs eating them if I leave them in the ground too long. There's only two of us, so we don't get through tatties very quickly. For which reason I won't plant so many next year!

Some store better than others, PJ as quoted being one of them.

If you've also got maincrop, use up the stored earlies first, but don't lift them for storing until they are mature.

What varieties are we talking about?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We stored our excess earlies in wooden boxes in the garage. They kept really well, think we finished them of in February! So we're not worried about having to store them again, though we will try and leave them to get a bit bigger this time.

They should store until that time of year, but you are just approaching the time that earlies think about growing again, which is why they should be used first.

Grew Pentland Javelin last year. Dug last ones around end of August. Stored in hessian sacks in the cellar. They were fine. Used them all up by Christmas.
