Fertile eggs have arrived.....
« on: May 28, 2009, 15:58 »
I cannot find the thread, but am sure that I read some where that eggs through the post should be kept for 24 hours to settle and also to come up to room temp.

Have I remembered this correctly, please?

I have a very patient speckled hybrid, Hetty, who I think must have Cuckoo Maran in her blood, so I have 3 Maran eggs and 3 Light Sussex for her to sit on.  They are from pure breed stock, but the Maran eggs are not as dark, or as large as I expected.

Many thanks for any replies.

Hi,
Maran eggs are not always that dark, according to some books Maran eggs range from light brown to chocolate brown, I have French Copper Marans and their egg vary quite a lot in colour, some are even two-tone.
When I sell the eggs though I do only send the darkest, the size of the eggs can depend on the age of the chicken, the older they are the bigger the egg.

And from what I have read, the chickens that lay the darkest eggs often are not the best layers in terms of quality/quantity. So if the eggs are a bit lighter, maybe the chooks you get will be more productive!

Hope they all hatch  :D
