Second year is so much better
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:41 »
I got me lottie a year last November, overgrown with brambles, carpet and the usual nasties. It was slowly cleared planting as I went, everything grew bar the french beans. Over the winter applied a layer of horse muck and weed suppresent fabric, obviously this year had an earlier start but everything seems huge, especially the onions, broad beans and parsnips so hopefully a bumper year, the only thing that suffered last year was me toms which were savaged by the blight. So for all you newbiesout there the hard graft pays off eventually.

We got ours around the same time as yours drizabone but we only managed to get it completely dug this spring. Our soil hasn't been pampered yet so I'm not expecting bumper crops but I'm starting to run out of room planting things and that feels really great!
It's all too much!

Glad to hear your having success. I've just managed to get hold of part of a mates garden, have measured out 8 8x4 beds, so the hard work starts this weekend. Got a rotivator for the weekend, had a look yesterday and there are loads of dead roots etc to clear so thought this was the best action to take.

All of you are right, it does get easier with time and the soil does improve with attention. You get out exactly what you put in, which isn't always what people want to hear, but it's the fact. Every experienced gardener went through the same ordeal with their newest plots/gardens, a sort of rite of passage for all gardeners. And we've all had to do all the wrong things in order to learn the right way as well.  ;)
