Artichoke Discovery
« on: May 26, 2009, 20:36 »
Ok so I was given what I was told were globe artichokes. I planted them as instructed waited for them to come up and they did. Tall green stems. No head, no flowers nothing, so the end of the year I cut them down and forgot about them until they started coming up this year. Wasn't until yesterday reading my gyo mag that it dawned on me when reading an article they were Jeruslalem Artichokes!  ???

Well I dug some up and had them for tea tonight and can't say I'm that keen. Does anyone have a nice recipe that might sway me?

You have not lost the battle unless you quit :)

I'm not keen either but I have some on my plot and I just get a couple of them and mix with potato and mash them. They're ok but a pain to peel I find, not really worth the effort from my POV.
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

If you click on the Recipes link at the top of the page, you can scroll down and you will see artichoke on the left hand menu
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They stand quite well, but are at their best Oct time IMHO

I'll warn you know they can be a bit windy, sometimes known as fartichokes

How did you cook them I like to roast mine, with the skins on.

We had them boiled with sausage and mash. I am going to give them another try when they should be eaten before ruling them out I think  ;)

As Ritchie points, best in the Autumn. My personal fave is Fartichoke, celeriac and spud mash, that and carrot and choke soup.
