Thanks everyone will try the epsom salts.
I'm drinking the wine a little less stressed :D
It's my first year with a greenhouse as the wind removed my last one after two days - like i said V windy on these moors, my replacement is built from recycled windows and doors which was another reason to worry as it is very warm.

I'll keep my back up seedling somewhere seperate just in case.

Yes, I saw it too ... but I didn't think it likely that one could get from a warning to completely mottled leaves in a week - but there again, I've not had blight, so I don't know how quickly it wrecks a plant.

Hi Samantha

I had that happen quite a lot last year (last year was my first year growing toms) and I kept thinking it must be blight but luckily they all survived in the end, I did keep cutting off the bad bits tho (ex hairdresser !) and I think this helped.  This year I'm getting the same just on the lowest leaves on some of them so I'll be keeping my eye on them and cheking out this great forum for advise on a daily basis!

Don't think that's blight from your pic...........looks like some sort of deficiency to me....what are you feeding them with...if anything?

See what blight looks like here to compare with yours
http://www.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?PID=217

Looks more like this to me..but not very clear...

Quote
Magnesium deficiency causes yellowing between the leaf veins, often more noticeable on the lower leaves.  control with two foliar sprays of Epsom salts (54g per 4.5 litres water) at fortnightly intervals.

I agree with Stig's mum ( and the others) - she diagnosed it correctly for me when I asked what was up with my toms.

The fright of blight is enough to put some of us off growing tomatoes outside altogether! Mine are still in their pots deciding "to be or not to be" planted out on the plot.

My Dad has grown a flock (what is the collective noun for 40 tomato plants? forest, blight, field?? ) of three or four different varieties for me to use again this year.

I intend to plant up a 10'x4' greenhouse to make sure we get some at home but the others are intended (by my Dad) for the plot.

Anyone else growing outside this year without spraying?  ???

For the record.

There have been only two confirmed blight outbreaks in the UK.

Both in Cornwall. One in a "volunteer" (self set) patch and the other in an outgrade pile, (last year's rejects).

The suspected outbreak in Kent has been ruled out, despite recently having a "Smith Period".

I'll repeat the Blight Maps URL, may I suggest you bookmark it.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

This is textbook symptoms of magnesiun defficiency. I would agree with NigelB on dose rates. A tablespoon per plant is a huge amount and could well harm the plants. Water some into the pot but also water the leaves as magnesium will be absorbed into them. The affected leaves will not be cured but any new leaves should be OK.

I don't spray mine either and some are in the greenhouse and some will go out.  We have never had blight - not sure it gets warm enough for a consistent enough period in Scotland!!!!!!!

Do you have evidence that it will harm the plants ? I have never seen any in the many years i`ve grown toms using that method.

BNot quite sure what this 'spray' refers to - epsom salts (if you can get it Boots don't sell it!) is for magnesium deficiency. Blight spray is something totally different.
