« on: May 26, 2009, 09:05 »
Sorry its me again!!!! the last araucana chick to hatch spent the night fluffing up with a welsummer chick in the incubator,  got up this morning and put them in the brooder but the araucana has one leg sticking out to the side!!??? it can still get about by hobbling (quite quick too) but its leg sticks out to 1 side an when it lays down it does it too!!!
Is this spraddle leg or something else!!! ?
Is there anything i can do? im sure i read something about little straps ?

Hi cl think I read somewhere about putting an elastic bands on, will have a look through the threads for you.
Staffies are softer than you think.

found this on the hen house, it was posted about the 15th May by poppies
Hi agree spraddled legs are not a disease  it is dislocated hips, oh used to cull them but I tie 2 knots in a 3" elastic band put one of their little legs in each hole keep trying length untill they can  stand /walk  straight - this is for bantams  larger chicks made need a bigger band, in 7-10 days take the bands off and they are fine this has worked every time i have done it

Good advice from Joyfull, spraddle leg is quite common in artifically incubated chicks, soft string, elastic bands etc will do and is usually very effective.

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.
