stopping from laying
« on: May 24, 2009, 19:11 »
One of my hens has an infection but still lays daily; a very soft shelled egg- access to grit daily. As the process of laying uses a lot of her resources is there a way of stopping her laying short term to enable her to put more into getting better. Has been on antibiotics from vet.

Many thanks

Hi Stuart,
Poor Bumble has really had problems since she was rescued as a battery hen last August. She sneezes continuously and has an infection in her chest, & two lots of antibiotics have failed to cure her.her feathers have not regrown unlike her 2 fellow friends. There are occasions when she is "off colour" and the next day she is fine.I just feel if she could stop laying then all her efforts could be spent on getting better. We have to throw away her eggs .....they are very poor quality.
I am very distressed seeing her with so few feathers & hearing her sneezing.
Hope that you can offer me some advice,
Thank you,
Jan

Hello Honeypot, sorry to hear about your poorly exbatt, you could try a teaspoon of poultry spice, it contains minerals including calcium to help with laying, plus you could mix in a good teaspoon of cod liver oil, this helps absorption of the calcium, mix well in with their pellets/mash will help as a pick me up. I also use a product called "oreg-stim" in times of stress, moult and have used for exbatts with good success. :)

Hello Foxy, many thanks for your help. I will certainly give all your suggestions a try & hopefully they will help poor Bumble. I would love to see her fully feathered like her four friends. I wish we could stop her sneezing, 2 lots of anti biotics haven't helped, I assume its something she will have to live with. Thank you. Honeypot
