Chickens Friend or fowe?
« on: April 03, 2007, 21:59 »
Hi. I have 12 warren pullets, just started laying. When they have a dustbath. Sometimes while one is dusting an other will peck at it eating its feathers. Why do they do this? eat feathers?

Gerty does thatn to Hattie.  It's not aggressive behaviour and is viewed (by the chooks) as part of grooming.  Although if my hair dresser pulled my hair out and ate it I  would probably take another view

Feathers are made of protein so quite nutritious, but if they eat too many though it can cause impaction in the crop  :(
