ripe chilli
« on: May 21, 2009, 18:25 »
I have a pepper plant which I m not sure if it is a chilli or pepper.  Long story, try to keep it short, got from T&M was stated as pepper and in brackets sweet, listed under pepperone peppers, name translates to devils tongue Peperone Ciliegia Piccante (Sweet), they seem to list chilli, peperone and sweet peppers.

Just tasted one that has turned red, and it is not hot at all.  But was very crunchy I could have picked too early.  If it was a chilli and picked when turned red but maybe too early would it still be hot.  If so then think they are sweet peppers after all with a daft name.

My peppers last year were quite mild (and disappointing!!) when picked early. When left on the plant longer they were much hotter and much more interesting. So I guess yours could still be a hot pepper but not been left long enough and the weather not been hot enough to make it extra spicy  :tongue2:

I think it would be mildly hot even if it was still green if it was a chilli :)

The mistery deepens then, I have to wait longer for the next red one to taste, its just about red one green streak left to go.  I'll leave that one on longer and taste.  I can't stand the anticipation.

You bought it as a sweet pepper and the name I guess refers to the shape not how hot it is.

As Tam said if it were a chilli then there would have been some heat present, even if minor. :tongue2: :tongue2:

Suspect that it is a Ripe Pepper not a Ripe Chilli. :D :D :D

Stressing the plant will make it hotter, if there's any heat to be had at all!  Similarly, generous watering helps tone down really scorching peppers to suit sensitive palettes.
