Itching and Losing Feathers
« on: May 20, 2009, 16:51 »
Hello again everyone,

Lester (our Silver Laced Wyandotte) has been frantically scrathings and pecking at herself today and when I picked her up to inspect her she appears to have pulled out lots of feathers from her underside  :(.

She's been broody for about 3 weeks and we've been trying to keep putting her out of the nest and out into the garden as often as possible.

I've attached some pics of the affected area. Our other 2 seem fine (although all on antibiotics as one of them has an infection - nothing too bad).

I can't see any red mites anywhere around teh coop, but could that be it - she's been sleeping in the nesting box I think.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mark

Hen's do loose some feathers underneath when broody, makes sure the eggs get in contact with the skin :)

Have you had a look round her vent, especially the area under the vent and down to check she hasn't got lice. The eggs are laid in clusters at the bottom of the feathers. Might be worth checking especially as she's been sitting :)

Sarah :)
