Leggy Brocolli seedlings
« on: May 20, 2009, 14:42 »
Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help. Have grown some calebrese brocolli from seed in the green house. Removed the cover as soon as seedlings began to show and repotted them on to small pots and took them out of the greenhouse outside.

They have about 4 leaves on each and are about 4 inches tall, but there seems to be no strength in the stalk and they all just keep falling over. Gently put sticks in the pots last night and tied them to the sticks but not sure what to do now.

Read somewhere that they should be resown covering up some of the leggy stalk to make them stronger, does this soon right??

Have had some problems with overwatering other things so have been careful not to drown these guys and only water when top of pots are dry.

Any advice appreciated.

I'd put them into a bed. Plant them deeply as you suggest. Water them in well, protect from pigeons and slugs and you should be away.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thanks for the advice, will do just that at the weekend and pray to the veggie god.

Plant deeply as already said and up to their first leaves, then really firm them in hard - this stops all brassicas especially sprouts from "blowing."
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
