Broad beans flowering- should I feed?
« on: May 20, 2009, 14:02 »
I planted a couple of rows of broad beans in autumn last year, these have been in full flower for over a month now and the flowers are starting to die back. I expect the pods will begin to set soon.

Should I feed / mulch them at this stage? Or just leave them to it?
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

I fed mine with some liquid manure - not sure whether you're supposed to but I've got loads of pods now.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I would open a decent sized pod and have a look :)

Hello Goose, If they're green and about the size of a 20pence piece, I would pick some. ( I prefer them young and tender anyhoo) ;) :)

I tend to sprinkle poulty manure around to give them and the potatoes a boost.  The soil was well feed before they were planted though.  Doesn't seem to do any harm. The leeks will go in when they come out so will need something for them to feed on.

When you eat broad beans really depends on how many you grow. If you do not have many go for the second option.

Some people start by steaming them pods and all when they are 3 inches long as with mange tout peas. This will help to thin them out if they are too many on the stems.

Later open a few pods when you think there are beans developed. Once they are a little bigger than a pea start eating them.

When they start to get big and develop chewy bitter skins cook them and then squeeze then out of their skins before serving.
