snapped off a whole tomato plant
« on: May 18, 2009, 21:37 »
Arrgghhh!! Got a gift froma friend of a Marmande plant and snapped it right off at ground level becasue I dropped the bag it was in. That was eight days ago.

Put it into a vase of water and it has roots all along both sides of the stem for about two inches up from the bottom  :D

Not sure when to plant it in soil -- suggestions please?  I don't want to lose it as it looks very healthy indeed  :nowink:

well it sounds like you have saved it.  As long as there is a good root system on it you should plant in good compost and keep protected till it is established and you should be away.  Good luck.

If it doesn't survive, I'll demand that sunshine band reports back!

Tomatoes are one of the easiest things to grow from cuttings, and seeing as this one has roots already there should be no problems.

I've just popped 16 reasonable side shoots into compost, taken from my "Shirleys". I deliberately let them shoot, (honestly!), as I realised I was a bit "top heavy" with the black varieties this year and wanted to balance them out.

I did the same thing about a fortnight ago.  Putting a plant (Roma in this case) into the cold frame and dropped it, snapping it right off.   :(

I lined it all up like a broken leg and planted it deep in a handy big pot (still haven't planted that cut'n'come again lettace now I think about it!) and it has never looked back.  Same size as all its siblings.  I don't know if it has rejoined up or made new roots ....  but it worked.

I have 'grafted' a tomato plant after I accidentally side shooted the leader.  Two matches and some sticky tape to strap it back together and away she went.

Cheers,

Gillie

I decapitated some ( very ) leggy plants that my dad had and planted up the tops... they're now about 6" high and flowering because they haven't realised that the ground is load closer than it used to be ... only a tomato plant can make a blonde look observant :D

Well it is safely in compost in the greenhouse, well shaded from sun (as if there has been any today hahahaha) and looking good --- flower buds and all  :D

I've looked now at the small side shoots on some of the others and might pot them up too ......
