Sweetcorn Food
« on: May 18, 2009, 16:28 »
Hi All,

Have my first allotment plot this year and growing sweet corn, the soil is not the best and I would just like to ask the masses what they would recommend in way of fertilizer / food for sweet corn.

what can I give it to help it along, how much and how often.

Thanks,

From one of John's Allotment Diary pages:

Quote
Planting Sweetcorn
Down at the plot, the main job was to plant the sweetcorn.
I planted in a block, 18" between plants each way and then covered with cloches. Sweetcorn likes a lot of nitrogen to fuel it’s growth so they got a generous feed with pelleted poultry manure.

Hope this helps

if you can get manure the corn would appreciate it. Food and moisture retention for the growing crop

I do have some manure over the plot its been sitting in a small pile in all weathers for around  8 weeks or so...is this still too fresh to use?

It normally takes around 6 months to rot down so yes, I'd say it is too fresh for putting round plants.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I put a couple of inches (well rotted) on the bed and rotavated in before planting the corn.  Would it be "too much" to put another couple of inches "mulch" on?

Perhaps I'm deluded in thinking I should only use a "couple of inches a year"?
