Carrots and raspberry canes
« on: May 17, 2009, 11:06 »
hi
we,ve got a row of raspberry canes in, they are only small at the moment, tallest being around 24". I was wondering if i could sprinkle some carrot seeds amongst them as the soil they are in is quiet fine, thought i could spred them thinly amongst the canes.
Is this ok

Fruit bushes of any sort , do not like the roots disturbed ,best not put carrots as you will need to dig deep to harvest them .
As the soil is light , for best results from fruit add compost and manure dressings , you may find that the soil is too free draining , fruit needs water to swell and develop fully.

If it were me I don't think I would....   :(

As has been said: Raspberries need the moisture to help produce good sized fruit. Carrots would nab that for themselves and then grow down into the raspberry roots (which tend to be quite shallow).

You might be able to get away with a few lettuce close by if you want to make the best of the space.  ;)

But.... you could just try it around one cane and see if it makes a huge difference!  ;)

You can, but they'll be fighting for nutrients and water, you'll get fewer rasberries and rubbish carrots.
Best just leave em be, they might need "lots" of space, but its worth it come harvest
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended
