Seen on our allotments and seems like a good idea.
Onion bed preppared in normal way, then a sheet of woven plastic weed suppresant fabric is placed on top.Onion sizied holes are burnt through the material with a gas paint stripper torch at appropiate planting distance.
Burning holes rather than cutting looks neater and stops the Terram fraying and which can be reused for years.
    Werks for them :!:    Bob.

The lad on the next plot to me has planted his onions the same way, also his tatties have been planted this way.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

That actually answer a question I had.
What other method for burning holes? I don't have the gas paint stripper torch.
Do not underestimate the therapeutic values of weeding!
1 dog, 2 children, 3 good reasons not to spread poison!

I've tried newspaper (2 sheets thick) covered in sand.  Then hole punched through & onion seedling planted.

Working so far!  :)
Sally (N.Ireland) Organic as far as I know!

Plant plenty.  Celebrate success.  (Let selective memory deal with the rest.)

You could try heating a round metal bar in a fire and poking through the membrane, the heat should seal the edges.
