I had some real help with some other queries so hope you can all come up trumps with my latest worry - this business of keeping chickens is not as easy as i thought it would be.  (only had my girls since Easter!)
I think that they may be breaking their own eggs.  Last Saturday while i was gardening nearby the hen house one of them came out, making a lot of noise with some broken shell in her beak and they all went mad for a bit.  The inside of the egg was broken in the nest box.  Since then I've had a few days of quite a few eggs from my 8 hens, one day 8 eggs but usually between 5 and 7 and then today 1 egg only and some more broken shell.
Not too sure what to do if anything.  Any suggestions please gratefully received.

If you look for threads under 'egg eating' you will get some useful advice. 
This will include putting in eggs filled with something nasty like hot mustard, taking the eggs out on a more regular basis, leaving in china eggs so the can't eat them, give them some extra protein(cat food), darken the nest boxes (put something over the front) ..... there are lots more ideas, best way is to try some and see if it works.  From my (short) experience you need to be vigliant as it is a difficult habit to stop once started...  There is one school of thought that you should just let them eat as many as they want as they will eventually stop - but I couldn't wait this long!
