Black and redcurrants
« on: May 15, 2009, 17:49 »
Hi all

This is the first real season with my black and red currant bushes and i wonder if i need to do anything to them, they were planted last season a month or so before the fruit ripened.  They both look really healthy and have berries on them already, im just wondering if i need to trim let to make the bush put the effort into the berries or do i just leave them to it?

Thanks for any help.

Leave them be.

Any pruning from November onwards.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Watch out for birds, they seem to like these fruits.

never had any bother with blackcurrants - it's the redcurrants the birds really go for.
Round here unless you net they will take them all when barely ripe
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Birds dont seem to bother with blackcurrants but will strip redcurrants at the pink stage before you are ready for them so best to net them as soon as.

remember redcurrant grow on old wood while blackcurrants grow on new so dont cut redcurrants right back later in year or youll have no crop next

When your blackcurrant has fruited, stick the healthy clippings into a spare bit of ground.  You only need to dig a spade in and make a slit, then remove the spade.  You should then have new bushes to expand your fruit area, for free!
In my experience, one can never have too many blackcurrants for jam and puds, etc.
Redcurrants do not need pruning so often, I usually only cut them back ever three years or so, but again, healthy trimmings can be pushed into a slit.
Good luck,
