Are brooders smelly?
« on: May 15, 2009, 17:02 »
I've been toying with the idea of buying some day olds to bring on myself, but I don't as yet have a brooding unit.   I am looking at one on ebay that I quite like - reasonable price, looks good, cat proof etc.

I also don't live on a farm/smallholding where there could be a room set aside for this on it's own so it would have to live in my sitting room.   I realise it may come down to how regularly it is cleaned out, but as I wanted to keep it in my sitting room I can't risk my OH having a go about it being too smelly.

what do you think?

I could not tell you as mine is in my garage.  It is not noticeable. But you would need a better bulb than that for chicken chicks as they should be kept at 37c for the first week and reduce each week by 5c. Then 5 weeks later out side under a covered run.

Not a bad price, we are using a heatlamp over old indoor rabbit cages for our ducklings. These are in my workroom at the moment but I have had them in my bathroom and bedroom.
Lots of newspaper and cleaning out several times a day would help with the smell and ducklings are worse than chicks! I can't smell it but am probably used to it. My OH lives in his own house so he just has to put up with it when he stays here. He does love the ducklings though and helps with swimming lessons. Nic.

the quick answer suzi.... YUP. they can stink.

will need de-pooing on a daily basis, and when they start mixing in their water and crumbs, its a right mess. and gets smellier lots quicker as they get older.

but well worth it  :)

They do smell Suzi but it's really worth it and as they get older, you can chuck them out in the day.

I've had some lots that don't smell too bad but it's really as they get older that they get stinky.  However, if you chuck them out in the day and clean them very regularly, it shouldn't be too bad.

I wouldn't spend lots of money on it though.  You can do it cheaper than that.  We used a 2nd hand indoor rabbit cage too and a desk lamp which I just put  a red screw in light in.  It's worked fine.  You can tell if the babes are too hot or cold.  Really they ARE the cutest things.  And it's lovely having them snuggle on your lap in the evenings.

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

about the brooder, yes they stink, i suppose it depends on how many you have, but i can tell you that 17 ducklings in a brooder in my bedroom, mucked out every day, were kicked out to the caravan after a week.
