Leaves on Sprouts
« on: May 15, 2009, 16:29 »
The leaves on the Sprouts I planted out 2 weeks ago have taken on a purple look to them. Is this normal? I saved 2 plants  (In case of casualtys) and potted up into bigger pots using the same soil and kept these in the coldframe and they look green and fine......Any ideas most welcome

I'm assuming that it is the cold that has caught them rather than the soil and/or fertiliser used. Sometimes I have had the same experience but they should be ok andpick up with the warmer weather. It's always a good idea to have spares though!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I did sprinkle a pinch of dried blood around them a week after planting out...I have them in raised beds which are in the first season of growing in...manured in winter and added a small amount of lime march time.....Is it possible that if the soil was too acid it could cause this????

I think your plants are just taking up nitrogen from the dried blood.

:) Mine often get a purple tinge when they get to the 6 leaf stage. I always put it down to the type of sprouts I was growing?
I always start mine off in the greenhouse, and this will somtimes happen just before I plant them out.
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

I think most Brassicas can have a gray to purple "Look" or "tinge" to them at times, without seeing yours, they are probably fine.
