2 day old chick not standing
« on: May 15, 2009, 01:04 »
I have a recently hatched maran chick with a dislocated hip? or at least a one leg sticking to the side so that it spends nearly all of its time lying down. Anyone know any cures. I have heard that putting a very lose elastic band around both legs for a day can help, but have never tried it. Anyone with any useful suggestions? cheers.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

spraddle leg isn't a desease, at least i don't think it is, we've had 1 or 2, we used wool to tie the legs roughly where they should be, 1 poland recoved in a couple of hours, superduck still has slight issues with one leg when he's tired.

Sarah :)

thanks for the link Sarah, i thought you could do something like that. Mine isn't quite as bad as that, only one leg seems to be going out the side. Have loosely tied them together, but will have a go at the elastoplast thingy.

Hi agree spraddled legs are not a disease  it is dislocated hips, oh used to cull them but I tie 2 knots in a 3" elastic band put one of their little legs in each hole keep trying length untill they can  stand /walk  straight - this is for bantams  larger chicks made need a bigger band, in 7-10 days take the bands off and they are fine this has worked every time i have done it

I had a chick that I couldn't do that with as she was dislocated or whatever it was from the elbow joint rather than hips.  She grew to around 8 weeks, but in the end I had to cull her as she couldn't walk at all, just kept going round in circles!!!

outlook not looking good for my chick - somehow it managed to take the elastic band off so i tried the little elastoplast splint but that didn't work either. I then tried hanging it upside down on its back for a few hours by the elastoplast to try and get its bodyweight to pull its hips back into position ( sounds horrific but the chick was ok and either slept or did pull ups with its legs ) That looked as if it was going to work for a few minutes but then it went over again and all the other chicks just seemed to want to peck it  :(
Have isolated it now and forced it to drink but it doesn't seem to want to eat so i suspect it will be gone by tomorrow :(

Unfortunately no improvement and it was being pecked and walked on continuously by the other chicks so thought it kinder to dispatch it.  :(

I have had to do the exact same thing as well this year. Not nice but part of rearing poultry.
