Are my onions normal? - updated with photos
« on: May 14, 2009, 22:25 »
My onions are growing well, especially those I planted in the winter.  They are even starting to bulb and I am very proud of this as I ended up with what looked like large spring onions from my late sown plants from the garden centre last year!

However, above the bulb, the stem also looks like an onion.  Kind of like a big spring onion with a bulb at the bottom and green leaves above.  Is this normal?  Or should it be green down to the bulb?

Afraid I have no idea, but if you don't get many answers it might be worth posting a piccie for us to guess at  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I will take a picture either tomorrow or on Saturday and post it.  I hope it hasn't gone to seed, although alium flowers are lovely!

They were grown from onion sets, can't remember the variety but the label is in the shed at the lotty so will look up when I take a photo.

To be honest I'm a little worried now they might be going to seed as a couple of them with the thick 'spring onion stem' are tall.  Will post a photo and variety when I have them.

Photos attached.

Firstly, one of the onion beds:

And a close up of the onion in the middle of the above picture:

This is one of the onions from the other bed:

Are they bolting, doing something else, or is this normal onion behaviour?

Sorry I forgot to get the variety from my list in the shed.

I dont want to be the one to put a dampner on it ,but they look as if they have far too much neck for my liking.Someone more knowledgeable may differ.

They have a bit more neck than normal because they are grown in a bed not in rows, and they were grown from sets sown last autumn....radar or senshu if I'm not mistaken.

They look fine. They will probably bolt soon, but nip out the flower stem as soon as you see it and eat those ones first. I've been harvesting mine for 2 weeks now; they are mainly used straight for eating as they won't store very well....I'm going to leave the last 3 non-bolters to go to seed and use that seed for next year's onions.

My onions look pretty similar.  I was told by a guy at the allotment that some of them have "fat neck" apparently it is just where they have not settled down into the soil as much when they were planted.  They are all edible but the ones with a fatter neck will not store as well.

I am glad to see your pictures as I thought I had planted too closely but it appears I am not the only one to have planted that closely in my keen-ness!  ;)

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I will keep an eye out for the flower stem and pinch it out.  I am very pleased that all is not lost!
