just got a greenhouse given to me by a neighbouring allotmenteer needs some glass but thats sorted just want to know if there is a specific direction it should be pointing? :blink: :blink: :blink: :blink:

Well, from experience I'd say gauge where the wind comes from and site the door at the other end so that it doesn't act like a huge glass windsock!

I have palpatations every time it's windy on my lotty in case it all ends up in next doors plot!

dont worry if not possible,just be thankful you have a greenhouse.

Just turn it round when there's an easterly.

Make sure your roof window is not opening into the prevailing (read most common direction) wind or it could get blown right open and break.

  very good yabba east to west it is then just have to trust in my windbreakers to help where the wind is concerned.

Try having a look at all the other allotments,see which way theirs are facing.I can't see it making allot of difference.

An east-west alignment means you get loads of sun in the middle of the day, whereas north-south means more sun early and late in the day. East-west would be good for the winter, possibly not so good for the summer.

Mine is North-South.  The "crops row" follow the path, so also N-S, and thus get sun on both sides.

I have roof vents on both sides and I open then ones away from the wind, each day. (I think a low-level louvre is the best way to introduce cooler air, which then rises and exits via the roof vents, but small greenhouses will probably require opening the door to get enough ventilation to cool it)

I have a slight fall towards the back, so the rain runs that way, and a pipe connects both gutters and downpipe to water butt

I wish I had dug the soil out before I erected it - it was rock hard, and very hot work!, when I got around to doing it later after erection.  (Soil replaced with 50% well rotted manure, 50% compost, that is replaced each year with the old mix being put where the potatoes were that year).

I also wish I had put a duct under the base - I would like to run a mains water pipe into the greenhouse now, and a duct would make it easier to retro-fit (ditto for electricity).
