Newbie onion question
« on: May 13, 2009, 18:44 »
G'day all  :D

I'm new here, so hello to all! This is my first year growing veggies. It's enormous fun. However, I may have THE most ridiculous question to ask (please don't laugh):

Does one onion seed produce one onion, or several? The variety I'm growing is Ailsa Craig.

Thanks!

One.

Or in my case, 10 seeds produce one onion.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Only joking!

Actually quite good. Got about 200 plants. Mind you, I forgot I'd bought the seeds and went and got sets as well!

You get both Parsnip. I'm growing the toms too, but went for other varieties in the onion sets

Hi Clueless Carrot and welcome to the site  :D

Don't know much about onions but am also from York - do you have a lotty and if so which site?  I'm on Scarcroft :)

Feel free to pop into the Welcome section and say hi properly, you'll get lots of hi's back  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have dug over half of my garden, no lotty for me, I'm afraid. I live about 5 minutes walk away from Scarcroft lotties though (walked past there on a wild goose chase to save some tadpoles a few weeks ago; hmmm, maybe that should have been a wild tadpole chase!)

If you are thinking of sowing onion seeds now to produce bulbs you are too late. They need to be sown in Feb/March.

You may still be able to find onion sets in a garden centre. It is plenty late enough for sets but if you hurry you will get a crop of some sort.

I know my onions!

Onions only need to be sown that early if you are after monster bulbs and have a posh greenhouse. Mine go in the ground late Feb/early March as the soil allows. This year 23rd Feb, looking good.
