The woodpigeons on our site are so fat they can hardly fly. They walk up and down my paths as if they were in Tescos. I'm surprised they haven't got shopping trolleys.
99p nets foil them though - they are quite dim as well.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I have a couple of woodpigeons that visit my garden and thought this morning that there'd be enough meat on them to make a nice pigeon pie

Bl**** heard of pheasants ate the damn lot...
not a bit left...totaled..decimated...

PAH48 - Same thing happened to me - only the Sky rats got mine! :(  At least pheasants are classier.   ;)

Bit like, if you are going to get knocked over - at least make it a Roller or a double decker bus.  Something with style!  Pheasants may have no brains, but they have style.  8)

how come a farmer can grow fields and fields of cabbages etc and not get a pigeon in sight ?,you can plant one cabbage and it will be stripped bare in seconds  ???

There is safety in numbers Shaun  :)

for the pigeons or cabbages ?  ;)

For the cabbages. The pigeons prefer chickweed, so some farmers leave an area for the pigeons  to grow chickweed. The pigeons will eat the cabbages, also when rape is just sprouting, some parts of the fields are just a carpet of pigeons.

Nets or fleeces or dogs.............

My money would be on pigeons, but depending on the location and type of damage it could be rabbits or slugs (even with the pellets about).

If you don't have any netting to hand, then I have found that those cheap poly tunnel cloches work to keep the pigeons off the brassicas.

I tried one of those but had to take it off in the end as it was too warm in there!

The eau de hawk certainly works - not seen a wood pigeon this year but the blokes with the racing pigeons on allotments around me aren't happy.
