Any hope for my pigeon ravaged peas?
« on: May 12, 2009, 22:17 »
Unfortunately got sidetracked on a couple of big DIY jobs at home so didn't net my peas after sowing them, and upon checking recently discovered that they have been savagely nibbled by the damn birds.

I have now netted them, are they likely to survive and more importantly crop, or should I cut my losses and re-sow some more?

You can leave the existing plants in place and right beside them direct sow more pea seeds, this time making sure to net them right away. With the warmer weather now, the peas should be up in no time. Even if the first plants recover, the new ones won't be a problem growth-wise.

I find that sparrows eat my peas rather than pigeons.

I tried growing them in our backs i'd be at the kitchen sink and watch the sparrows come down and rip the leaves off they didn't eat the leaves just ripped them off and spat them out.

Give up in the end

Had the same thing happen to my Brussel Sprouts, they were doing extremely well, very healthy, about 12 inches tall... and something is tearing the leaves and leaving bits of the leaves on the ground!  Pigeons?  I reckon so...
Also had one of my young globe artichokes dug up, left to die and a huge hole where the plant had been >:(
Could be foxes (we have lots around here)...  or rats though there are not other signs about.  Then last evening I went out late and the wind had nearly flattened my broad beans... spent about 30 mins re-tying my plants (they look fine today)...
All these things come to try us and as long as we don't weaken.... we win in the end :)

My faher told me that his dad always dipped peas into paraffin before sowing them to discourage the mice from nibbling the lot. Apparently it worked withouth reducing germination.

Not sure whether it was ordinary paraffin or liquid paraffin.
Ever tried this?

Just a thought.  ;)
