Rhubarb question

We inherited several established crowns of rhubarb with our allotment, and we had a good amount last year and are getting more this. The only problem is a good amount of the atalks seem to be growing out sideways, many at ground level, and they are turning yellow rather than ripening. Other growers on out site have nice-looking growth. Most of which is growing upwards. Is there anything we can do to improve ours or at least stop it going sideways?

Probably old stock and the crowns are way above ground, so would need splitting up and re-planting. But if you are going to do this, don't do the whole bed in one go just in case it goes wrong.

Dig out (Not an easy job and I have busted the odd spade on Rhubarb before) a couple of crowns, split them into small pieces with at least a couple of leaves on and re-plant somewhere else.

Then if the new ones are growing well next year, move the rest.

Good advice but do not do it until late winter. Nov, Dec, Jan.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, the crowns are well established and, also yes, they are well above ground. I'll wait 'til the back end then split and re-plant them.

Don't forget to give them a good feed of well rotted manure too.
