Chooks update
« on: April 01, 2007, 22:41 »
Well, there is good news and bad news concerning our ex-battery hens.  Another one died today, poor little scraggy.  She's not looked good for week now, and I thought she was going to go a few days ago, but she soldiered on and yesterday she looked a bit brighter, eating a bit and drinking.  I held her gently today because she tried to jump down from a perch and fell over, but a couple of hours later, she'd gone, so that's 5 now we've lost since September.  I thought she was no.6, but I counted them today, we've still got 45.

the good news is that today we managed to get the wire we got at the auction round the new run, which makes their run twice the size, and my eggs are seling well, so OH says we can get some more ex-batts, he wants another 30, but I think in that house 20 will do, so I must contact John our area co-ordinator to see when his next rescue is.

Also OH has promised me that this year we WILL get some turkeys for Christmas!  Mind you he said that last year and the year before and the year before (have I got back to 2002 yet!!!!LOL)

No I don't use cider vinegar.  Occasionally give them some stuff I got at CWG, but can't remember off hand what its called, that goes in their water. but food wise they get their layers pellets in the morning, then after lunch some corn and a bit of green stuff cabbage etc also in the afternoon and they have  bowl of crushed oyster shell and grit in their house.

OH tells me they don't need anything else!!!!!  Like he also won't let me put the 2 that we segregated some time ago because one of them looked a bit poorly and the other was an egg eater, but they are both well and happy now and I keep sayingI'm going to put them back in the big house at night like most people say, but he keeps telling me not to do it, then this  afternoon he said I've got another way to do it.  We put the corn in the little run and the big new one (the little house and run are now inside the big new run, then after a couple of days we just open up the little run when all the chickens are eating the corn and hope they don't take any notice of the 2 'newcomers'.  Sounds daft to me, the 43 chickens won't appreciate sharing their corn with the other 2 will they?  This reminds me of my funny story, but I'll put that in a separate post!

pick up some apple cider vinegar and put some in thier water drinkers a half cup to start in a full conatiner . this will have a good effect in killing bad bugs in their guts etc . ( simple thinking )   if you have  dandelions growing around ya in the back road fields cut tm and feed them loads  this will make em loose for a couple days but then will really give me some good benefits

Well, got my cider vinegar today Munty!  Told OH you said I had to buy it and he said oh, OK!!

So gave them some tonight before i shut them up.  Couldn't remember how much you said to give them until I just read your earlier post, so I probably didn't give them enough, but will give them more tomorrow when I refill their buckets

There  was a girl at my primary school who was a right greedy mare. We used to get a paper bag full of salt, and thinking it was kali (if you can remember it) she used to lick her finger up to her elbow and stick it in the bag. You should have seen her face when she tasted it
