Should i use any kind of insect or slug pellets
« on: May 11, 2009, 23:19 »
Hi all,

I have my Sq ft garden going at the minute and wanted to know should i use any kind of slug or insect pellets once the seedlings start to grow alot bigger to prevent any kind of insects from distroying the veg. I allready have debris netting over the whole area.

Is there any recommened ones to purchase that are also cat friendley just incase my cats decided to get under the netting. Also using these would it add any chemicals to the soil and the veg that are growing as the only other thing in the soil is Fish Blood and Bone.

No need for any chemicals on a small area. Most pests can be controlled without using any chemicals. Slugs and snails can be caught by hand, or attracted to a half grapefruit peel, or you can set beer filled jars as traps for them to drown in. Catterpillars, insects, aphids etc can be picked off or squidged. You have netting which will keep a lot of pests away.

i think slug pellets now contain a substance called BITREX. this prevents cats eating enough to cause poisening.

Don't mean to sound facetious, but surely if they look like the slugs eggs in the photo posted by bombers on this thread, then they're slugs eggs, and if they are solid orange balls which look like osmocote (can google it), it's fertiliser?

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
