Common sense warning
« on: May 11, 2009, 09:55 »
Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing.......

Just a warning to all you chicken/duck/geese fanciers to avoid the discomfort I have suffered the last couple of weeks.

With the summer rapidly approaching, it was time to clean down the patio and out came the pressure washer.
Stupidly I did not wear a face mask and during the clean up, I must have inhaled aerosol droplets of which contained things I do not want to imagine.

As a result, 2 weeks of not being able to move more than 5 minutes away from a toilet has left me feeling very drained and sore.

Today the test results confirm it as campylobacter of which chickens are a good source.

So please - Wear a mask if you clean down areas where the birds have been free ranging and always wash your hands with a bacterial hand wash.

The man with a plan

very sorry to hear you have been through this hell. Can I add for benefit of others that other routes also exist to get the nasties into your system such as droplets getting in eyes or ears that then run down tear ducts into back of throat and of course off hands or wrists if you touch your face no matter how inadvertently such as moving your glasses, adjusting face mask, pulling shirt over head, etc etc etc. Even wearing gloves has problems unless you remove gloves in a way that prevents bare hands touching gloves on the contaminated sides.

Thanks for sharing this!  I never thought of this and there I was happily hosing everything down!  I hope you are feeling better soon!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Thanks for the warning, will bear that in mind especially when cleaning their house, pots and feeders, as the same could apply I should think.
