Help in identifying weed please
« on: May 11, 2009, 09:25 »
Does anyone know what this weed is, i think its a weed ?  It has a fingernail sized bulb on the end of the root about 6 - 8 inches down in the ground.  The foliage is very carrot-like.  What would be the best way to eradicate it.  Thanks all.

that root looks  like bindweed  >:( >:( >:( ... but the leaves look too long & thin.  Maybe its a variation of the same species?  Does the root "snap" easily when bent?

 Not bindweed of any kind

Could be fumitory, but hard to see from picture - any pinkish flowers?
If it is - it's only an annual so ahould hoe off
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

It does look a bit like fumitory. According to my book, if you sniff the roots of fumitory it makes your eyes water like smoke does.

Perhaps not wild, but it's slightly miffed at being dug up. :tongue2:
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The picture in mumofstig's link has different leaves from philskin's weed. Fumitory leaves are more divided.

Probably wild (or turned loose) carrot.  Also looks a little like Fools Parsley.  Both love cultivated ground as it needs bare soil to be able to take hold.

I have a similar looking plant all over mine.  Very fine soft leaves, and a short root system.  Easy to pull out.  It wilts in in a few minutes and happily rots on the heap.

If it's got a "bulb" could it be a pignut (conopodium majus) ?
