Am I too late to sow Broccoli and Calabrese?
« on: May 10, 2009, 11:14 »
Hi

I am too late to sow broccoli and calabrese this year?

If not should I sow in pots or straight in the ground?

Regards

Don't think so, not according to the month by month guide on here any way. I put mine in pots to start but I am new to this so am willing to stand corrected  :) Give it a go any way you can always pot them on when bigger

good luck

Get a move on for Calabrese, if you sow in pots it will be quicker, but you will have to harden them off before putting them in there final position.

Summer flowering Broccoli would be treated the same and the spring eating stuff is about the right time to sow now or in the next few weeks anyway.

Agree with all comments made. If you try and plant direct in the ground and it is dry flea beetle will probably chew them to death. I am having problems even with 6 leaf cabbage recently transplanted.

My advise would be to have a look at the seed pkt for the varieties you fancy growing.  :)There are many types of broccoli and calabrese and sowing and harvest times vary considerably, so pick one that suits your sowing timetable :)

Look here for a few varieties

There is a free packet of broccoli rapa with June's GYO so this variety is OK . I am sowing early purple sprouting this week in a seed bed  :D

Just to clarify ....Broccoli cima di rapa grows very small spears of green broccoli suitable for stirfry or pasta sauce only, so if you want the green heads of broccoli you see in Tesc@ don't grow this one

I agree......it makes a terrific past sauce YUM and very quick to grow :)

1 packet of Orecchiette pasta (this is traditional but penne can be used)
400g of small broccoli spears
1 clove of garlic
3-4 tablespoons of olive oil
2 anchovies
Freshly grated Peccorino/parmesan to serve
Salt and pepper

Cook the broccoli in slightly salted water, Drain
Gently fry the garlic in the oil and remove when lightly browned.

Now roughly chop the anchovies and stir in. Add the cooked turnip , and mix well, lowering the heat to allow the flavours to mix. Season to taste, be careful as the anchovies can be salty.

In the meantime, boil salted water and cook the pasta. Drain and add the sauce, season with Chilli oil and freshly ground black pepper.

Similar to what we have but without the anchovy and with finely chopped green chilli (There should be a smiley for yummy I reckon  :D) or a dash of sweet chilli sauce over the top before serving
