Resowing leeks
« on: May 08, 2009, 16:30 »
My leeks have been destroyed by slugs/snails.  So is it too late to sow direct?

IMO you can resow they have all year to catch up. They don't have to be transplanted untill july so they should make enough growth in the warmer weather before then (says she hopefully) :)

Mum is right, it's rather perfect to sow leeks in June, a winter crop, after all.

Gosh you must have hungry slugs/snails. I cant remember mine ever being eaten by slugs. Perhaps you have very tasty leeks?

Me neither, so are you sure it's not something like a rabbit or pidgeon?

First it was a field mouse in the cold frame, munching on the cabbage, ate all the trailing lobelia plants,    also had a nice meal on the special exhibition sweet peas I had nutured with tlc, then found slugs & snails.  Leeks not been out of the cold frame.  Whatever, I need to start over

I have some leek seed just showing through.... sowed it for a friend to avoid her paying high price for a pot of young plants. (Being mean I can't spare any of my larger ones sown way back).

I think they will stand a chance of catching up so it's worth a try. Pot or tray somewhere warmish and hope for the best.

Little blue-pelletty stuff for the mice?  :( Or empty the cold-frame and find out where they are coming from.

Also never had slug prob with leeks.  ???

Thanks all, bought more seeds, and have planted them direct to-day.  They have two chances!

i always sow mine in half trays, cover and place somewhere warm.
normally through in 5 days.it's more succesful than direct sowing.
