Thanks to a suggestion on here from Ice, this is what I use:

I tried this but my dog kept trying to pinch them so I ended up with squashed one's covered in little springer teeth marks

Pictures please!

Pictures ASP just as soon as I have finished emptying the sherbert out. Shame it's not edible anymore  :tongue2:

this might be a little off-topic: but don't be so hasty to throw the sherbert away!
the law states there has to be a best before date for within a certain time of packaging, but that doesn't mean that it's inedible after that date!
it's just to protect the shop-keeps.
If the date is less than 2 years ago, it'll be fine to eat (although, it might not taste as yummy - flavour goes after a time)

(ps: it's not against the law to sell out-of-date food either)

.... cheap tennis balls in Tesco and Summerfield at present.  They make excellent cane tops and last a couple of seasons.
In my experience I find it difficult to make a hole in a tennis ball. Knives are a non-no as far as I am concerned - they have a habit of biting me, and a drill would need a vice, which I don' have. Beside - free is even cheaper!

If you need to make holes in plastic balls , bottles , planters or pots an electric soldering iron does the job nicely.....no cracking and splitting like you get when drilling.

I use a completely free (to me) system for my canes.  my son had daily enemas for years and I saved the fleet enema bottles, perfect neck size for the canes and enough bottle to stay on top of the cane and enough rattle to act as a deterrant to birds!

Thanks for advice.... but the sherbert had reached the dustbins...  :( clean but decidedly disposed of. I am now in possession of 14 cyclindrical boxes with about 30 coloured plastic pots in each!

Another job to do.... empty and store for future use.. and I will have a close look at the sell-by date too.  ;) as well as take a photo and post it when I have time.  ;)

In my greenhouse I use old snail shells -- the children used to think it acted as a warning to any passing molluscs (I wish )

Now that is a novel idea, and most unusual. Sounds like this would make a nice photograph  :D
