I would like an asparagus bed, it's probably too late this year, but would value advice on how to set about it ::)

This article is on the Information pages of the site, about asparagus

Oh, and I've moved the thread to the Grow Your Own forum as it's about growing edible crops!  (Don't worry, you'll soon find your way round the boards Wendy  :D )

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

C'mon you have to elaborate on that comment now! ::) :)  Why not?  An asparagus bed is something I am aspiring too as well - I absolutely love the stuff and so does my 3 year old! :D

:( How disappointing!  I must admit, I think I would be a bit gutted too...but I can't offer any helpful suggestions because I don't know a thing about growing it yet.  Did you complain to them again about the second lot too?

How frustrating.  What's your theory then as to why nothing is happening?

The first lot i had was in Mar 2008 and they were bone dry when they arrived,i think they were dead when i planted them despite hours of soaking prior to planting, the replacements arrived in Oct 2008 and looked really good, the only thing i can think of is the ground was too cold for them.Perhaps i am just no good with Asparagus.

Juuuuuust to get back on topic

It's a smidge to late now to plant crowns ( 1 year old seedlings ), but you *just about* have time to buy seeds and plant them ... which will save you a fortune next year ;)

not got my own but my lottie neighbour has Asparagus bed, which is also his strawberry bed.  Asparagus is up and he's harvested some already, then the strawbs will follow after.

I bought crowns last Spring about this time last year and they are excellent. The company I bought them from holds them in a chiller so they do not start growing..

I bought 30 from ebay last year and they all died, so I complained and he sent me 30 more for free. I lost about 12 of them over the winter and stuck the rest in a new bed a few weeks ago.

OH did the work on the bed, and she lined it with old sandstone bricks and dug in a good amount of rotten compost. Only issue we have with the bed is it looks like a grave with the stones round it, all it needs now is a headstone :) :)
