Grapes again
« on: May 07, 2009, 10:36 »
Hi all, i did post on grapes before but can't seem to find my original thread.

Bought this £3 grape vine and put it in a pretty big pot and as advised i have read a couple of books on grapes from the local library but one is really for americans and the other is quite tricky to understand.

My vine is growing quite nicely but i just have one question, should i just be letting one shoot grow and cut off the others? i think this is what i'm supposed to do but just wanted to ask before i actually do it. Many thanks in advance

as a general rule of thumb yes, just allow one shoot to grow, and pinch out any grapes that might form, this is to encourage root growth, but i have only planted mine into the ground and not into pots so may be differnt.

Hi try this advise

You need one shoot to be the leader this you train up the greenhouse.

On planting (winter) cut the leader to a strong bud on ripe, firm wood. Cut any sideshoots to two buds. Throughout summer tie in the leader, cut laterals to five leaves and sideshoots to two leaves. Remove any flower cluster. Repeat this the following year.
When you start cropping, cut non fruiting sideshoots back to 4 leaves and fruiting ones to two leaves past the bunch.
