i live near two, and the Waterways that look after them has its own dumping ground where they put things that are left near canals or in canals - it is amazing what you can find there.

My local one has railway sleepers (too heavy too move) boulders the size of an armchair (for a real rock garden, haha) and pallets.

It has about 30 pallets. I've been invited to take them all.

If only I had an idea what to do with them...
Actually, I'm considering building a shed.

If you live near a canal, it's worth asking about...

with the pallets you could build your compost heaps or part of a shed (may need more than 30!) break them down (if not too softened by the water) and use the wood for short term raised beds.

If you could get someone to help you with the sleepers then they would really be useful at some time on the plot for raised beds or just a sitting area even

I live literally at the end of the line for two of the biggest canals in the UK. I should really check this out, so thanks for the tip.
