Transplanting Leeks
« on: May 06, 2009, 18:32 »
I think mine are ready to go and have read about the depth of 6 inches, covering first joint and trimming roots and tops then watering in from the side - but how wide should the hole be? I'm finding it a bit strange just to leave the plants in an open hole!
For the latest on the BIG project, read my blog.

I'd say about an inch, perhaps up to two - stick a broom handle in and wiggle it around a little, is my approach  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Plant the leeks quite close together (about 3" apart, then when they are as thick as a pencil, harvest every other one (not all of them, of course! enough for a meal), trim them and cook them whole. They are lovely and tender and very tasty. Keep harvesting till you have had enough of leeks and there are other things to eat, and let the rest grow to normal leek size for the Winter.  (Be in company with the chef at Le Quartre Saison! - I think that's the place ...)

Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.
