Tomatoes: Empty growbags into hanging baskets?
« on: March 31, 2007, 01:17 »
HI all  :D

Is it ok to use growbag compost and empty them out into hanging baskets to use for my hanging tomatoes?

I am wondering what would be best to plant them in. If not growbag content, what would you reccomend?

many thanks!

I usually use bag of grow more compost for my tomatoes.
I dont think it really matters what type of compost you use - just a general purpose one.
If you are putting them in hanging baskets try adding some of those water crystal things that swell up when you add water because the tomato in the basket will not like being dry.

I do it every year for my greenhouse toms and did it last year for hanging toms in baskets & tubs. As Munty would say 'werks for me'.

Lentil's idea of water retaining crystals is a good one, if you can find the ones I tend to use - J. Arthur Bowers instant planters, they've already got them in the compost.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

organic so far
If this matters to you then you'll find organic growbags very expensive.  Perhaps some of your own best compost?  Feed with comfrey liquid.

go for it . werks fer me your only doing the same as what ya do in a grow bag . and if ya worrying about watering buy some crappy cheap kitchen sponges  1.12.inch by 3 inch in funy colours  jobbies from £ shops and stick em in the bottom of the basket on top of a bit  old carrier bag  so the water dont run off qwik
