Sick Beans
« on: May 05, 2009, 18:36 »
I planted out my first French and Runner beans this weekend. When I took a quick look at them this morning, the Borlottos and the Runners looked pretty unhappy - see photo below. The leaves are shriveled up and have gone darker green. The dwarf French beans look ok, and there are a couple of beans that are still ok.

Any idea why they're so sorry for themselves?
A few clues: I hardened them off for 2-3 days, planted them out at about 4 inches high as i read, but my site is quite windy - certainly windier than my garden where they were hardened off. (I'm in Oxfordshire, and they had pretty decent weather since they were planted)

Probably a little bit cold for them just yet. Protect them with polythene until it warms up again.

your beans looking a bit leggy , maybe wrap them up with a fleece or debri netting ,

its still a little cold,

ill take my bebri netting off mayube 3rd week may and then start feeding with liquid chicken pellet

one cup of chicken pellet manure to a 5 gallon container ,

then its two cups of liquid to one x 2 gallon watering can,

ill do this once every week ,

and if it gets dry ill water them 2-3 days after feeding , , good luck

As others have said, it's been quite chilly at night despite good weather, and they may have got a little chilled or frosted (it doesn't need to drop much below 6 degrees at night for this to happen).  Also the wind effect.

Also, you say you only hardened off for 2-3 days.  That's really not long enough, it should be at least a week or two (max) - initially during the day only, then overnight in sheltered place etc.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
