Leeks, what would happen if..
« on: May 05, 2009, 12:33 »
.. I planted them out just like I do any other veg?

I have read about the way you should plant leeks, dig a fairly deep hole, place the individual leek in and add some water. The leek then grows to fit the hole, right?

What if I took my leek, which is in a 4" pot, and simply planted it out level with the surrounding soil, like we do for nearly everything else?
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

You'd also probably get a lot of leaf & no stem.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They get planted deep so you get a lovely white shank. If you plant them on the level though you can place a length of pipe over them so you blanch the shank to get it white.  Folks use that grey plumbing pipe, about 4 or 5" diameter

I do make a deep hole for mine using a bulb planter or a strong stick and just wiggle it back and forth to make your hole, drop it in and water it

Why not do both then you can compare the results  :)

Some leeks are grown at ground level. What you get are pot leeks with a thick white base and lots of leaf. I think they are used in stews and soups?

It is recommended that they are about 6" tall and pencil thickness.

Mine have never been that big tho'  ::)

They can be planted in situ quite late, after harvesting early spuds
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for that, I just hope I don't kill them off before planting out, as I nearly did with the broccoli. First year growing veg, I'm getting there, lol!!
