Dead Cucumbers.
« on: May 05, 2009, 11:59 »
So everything in the SFG is growing amazingly!! All are large and healthy, all except the cucumbers.

I planted 3 seedlings out, they were all doing great until this morning when I went out to check for cat mess, and there is only 1 cucumber plant, the other two are all yellow and shriveled and flat, it is most peculiar.

As you can see, they are covered with high netting!

In away you are lucky as Cucumbers are far too large for a SF garden anyway.

Mine are in my greenhouse and look as though they want die (I think they can tell I don't love them).

Not sure why you think they are too large for an SFG... but I fear I have run out of time to start sowing a new set now.

Still plenty of time to sow cukes as well as the squash/pumpkin Riala. :)
Put the seed tray inside a polybag on a warm windowsill they'll be up quite quickly :)

Cukes are extremely sensitive to even slight chills, which is possibly what happened. And cukes started indoors must very gently be introduced to sunlight, like 1/2 hour per day for the first few days. Then graduate to 1 hour, etc.

And no, it's not too late to start them, even in situ.

I would be temted to pop to the garden center and buy some young plants rather than seeds again.Just incase the seeds fail!!

I sowed mine and put them outside on the warm days a couple of weeks ago, bringing them in at night, but one night I forgot to bring them in again and they've been OK ever since.

As soon as a frost threatens I'll be down like a shot to bring them in, but for now they're putting on some good growth in pots at the lotty :)

Cucumbers are very sensitive ~ too much water they droop!! too cold they droop !! If you give a droopy one some warmth they sometimes perk up !!

Out of 8 cukes I have one left!

I planted it out in the GH today in a large bucket and will cross my fingers. If this one feels the need to depart then so be it, I have gave it more TLC than the rest put togather!

Mmmm. I have three left out of the original five, and on two of them , the lower leaves have gone a bit floppy. The other one did it the other day, then recovered. It is all very strange, I have grown cucumbers for years and don't remember ever having so many problems with them as I have had this year.  :(
