Plastic Growhouse breeched!
« on: May 05, 2009, 10:24 »
I've just started growing my own this year and brought one of those plastic growhouses, I went to check on my plants this morning and discovered something had been munching on some cucumber plants that were given to me...... after a bit of investigation I found a tiny slug all curled up at the base of one of my courgettes?? Its now been evicted but how do I stop this happening again????
Thanks

Burn the growhouse!

Not really, could it have already been on the plant when it was given to you?

I have found a few snails in mine.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

the thing about those plastic growhouses (if I'm thinking about the right thing here) is that they aren't hermetically sealed so stuff can still get in from below.

even in a proper glass greenhouse you'll get a few slugs and snails; I think they pretend to be slow movers but when you're back is turned they zoom in and before you know it you've locked them in the gh and they're rubbing their foot with glee!  :D

Slug pellets
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Some funny replies...

I've got two of the plastic greenhouses and you have to go on slug patrol, cos the little critters sneak in at the bottom...you can see the little trails of slime arond the outside

I just move the tastier nibbles up to the top shelf, make em work for it I say.. ;)

Put the pellets inside a container/trap where the slugs can get them but the children cant :)

can you maybe get some sort of tray that the frame and plastic cover sits in and fill the tray with stuff slugs don't like?  i.e. dry sand, crushed eggshells etc?

I've got a small plastic greenhouse in my tiny garden, I have to say I'm constantly on slug patrol. So far fingers crossed not too much damaged done... well only to the slimy pests :D

I think this is a total fallacy - slugs and snails move about on a trail of slime so they can go on anything. House bricks are pretty rough but this does not stop the snail climbing up them and I have some cacti in the greenhouse. Went in there the other day and there is a trail of slime all the way up the 6 inches of cactus - so the spines did not deter them even.

The pot idea is probably the most likely, but I have not tried it.

Use a liquid slug killer such as Slugit.

Hiya, am a lurker jumping in for the first time - I just found a huge snail in my luvverly poly greenhouse having a go at my runners, not yet planted out but hardening off.  I caught it last week and it moves like the clappers (what ever the clappers move like lol) have left it in the bird food I put out.

Hiya everyone did post a hello some time ago, should I do another one, this is my first post?

Elaine

Hi there Eli40... lurkers welcome here!! I wouldn't have left the snail alive as you so rightly say they can't half shift and he'd be back before you know it  :tongue2: :tongue2:

Enjoy the forum --- great stuff here you know  :D IMHO
