Wheezy hen
« on: May 01, 2009, 07:44 »
I have a wheezy hen.  I heard a few bark-like sneezes yesterday, but couldn't spot who was doing it.  &am this morning, I saw that Clarabelle was gasping for breath.
In dog's cage now waiting for vet to open.
Any advice welcome.  (I can never find old posts when I need them!)
Please keep your fingers crossed for her.

Could be a few thing from a respiratory infection to gape worm.  The vet will be able to tell I'm sure.  Let us know how whe gets on !!!

Thank you Aunt Sally and TMG,
Clarabelle has a very noisy chest - her whole body rocks with the effort of breathing.  The Vet didn't need her stethescope really and blames our changeable weather for the infection.
Anyway, Clarabelle was a very good girl whilst she was given an injection and is back with her eight sisters.  No point keeping her seperated as she has probably already shared her germs with them.  Therefore, they are all now being given medicated water for seven days.
Although the eggs would probably not harm us, it is not recommended to use them.  What a shame!

Good news Cath :)

Although the eggs probably wouldn't be of any harm to you very low doses of antibiotics like that is one way bacteria become resistant to them.  So for everyone elses wellbeing (including animals) it's best to bin the eggs.  You could feed some of them (hard boiled) back to the chooks while they are taking the antibiotics though.

Thank you all.
Yes, I was going to ask about hard boiled eggs back to the girls, so thank you for mentioning that, Aunt Sally.

Clarabelle is still breathing very heavily this morning, so hope the injection and medicated water soon turn her around.  Her whole body is rocking with the effort.  The other eight girls seem fine, thank goodness.

Mum (me) will be much firmer next time we get an horrible wet day and they want to be out in it!!!  They all looked like drowned rats with Poland hair-styles, but kept going back out for more!  Isn't it amazing how soon they dry off though?

i don't think getting wet had much to to with the problem, if it did i'd have no hens left! more likely she picked it up from the enviroment.

Clarabelle didn't make it despite the anti-biotic jab yesterday.  She has been gasping all day and it just became too much for her about 15 minutes ago.  Such a beautiful Black Nera to, bless her.
