I can't remember when you plant out celeriac - do you have to wait until after the last frost?

In cooler areas, sow indoors or in a greenhouse / cold frame. Sow two seeds to a small pot (7.5cm / 3in) in early March. When the seedlings emerge, thin out the weakest growing one. The plants can be transplanted to their final positions in mid-April when the danger of frost is minimal. Acclimatise the plants to the outside conditions for a week or two before planting outside.

I just googled it ::)

I don't plant them out before end of May/early June - besides there is not much of them to plant out - they don't like frosts.

OK thanks everyone. As a compromise I think I will start hardening them off gradually, and aim to get them out by mid/late May.

If they are big enough I would plant out now - a long growing season is essential.
You could always cover with fleece if we get a real frost but they would stand some they are not that tender
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

What do folk think about pot-on, rather than plant out, if long season is essential?

Mine are still tiny, but I think they will grow faster in pots, cosseted!, than in the cooler outdoor conditions for the next 4 weeks, or so.

I go with the geurilla approach - they were taking up too much room on my windowsill, given by a friend I don't much like them anyway - so out they have gone, no hardening off or anything  :lol:  kill or cure - if they survive it was meant to be if not, i won't shed any tears  ;)

That's why I mentioned size, Kristen. They are slow growing things and as the slugs love them to bits it is hardly any point in putting a tiny thing out...

Yes, sorry, that was my point - I didn't explain it very well.

celjaci  said "If they are big enough I would plant out now - a long growing season is essential. "

My view is that for a long growing season I would sow early, raise with heat, pot on and plant out later, by which time I think the plants will be much further on than if planted out early.

But maybe there are other factors that I should be considering?

I've never been bothered to transplant Celeriac, even though it is a root, but maybe I should plant straight away into final-sized-pot, rather than pot-on?
