Soil PH testers
« on: April 30, 2009, 17:33 »
Hi
I've seen some PH meter thingys(green plastic box with a meter and two long probes) on Ebay and am wondering if anyone has tried these?
If so are they any good? Or are the kits that you dissolve soil in water better/more accurate?

Thanks in advance for your experiences.

Can I add to this as there was an item on EBAY that said that it was a "SOIL PH AND FERTILITY PROBE".  The item has since been sold and an online shop that I use no longer sells the product.  Anyone idea whether it can test both the PH level and the fertility and if so is it any good?  Thanks in advance gwolf65 for letting me expand upon your query.

If you only want a PH probe they're only £2.99 in Wilko so save your postage

I've always been under the impression (from sites like this?) that cheap electronic pH testers are wildly inaccurate, and that the best thing is to use the little testing kits - pretty accurate for the same kind of money and after all, how often do you need to test pH? Once when you start and once a year after that?...

The drawback with using the chemical ones is that you're not supposed to just test one cm area of your plot - so the cost quickly adds up when you test different areas of the plot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
