now i feel obliged to respond or i seem selfish and uncooperative! still waiting for an answer to my original post....

In all seriousness dave, one difficulty with your original post is that you've come to a forum of individual and domestic chicken / poultry keepers, not people who are involved in policy or major organisations responsible for breeding / keeping poultry.

We just don't have that sort of statistical information, nor celebrities as forum members (at least not who own up to that status  ;) ) - and I guess you've not been around the forums long enough to ascertain that, rather than jumping straight in with a series of questions which forum members don't relate to, and without properly introducing yourself or having the courtesy to ask the site owner before doing research for a public broadcaster  ::) .

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Wow is all I have to say about this thread. Oh, and very well done!

Dave did bring up one good point though and it is a problem that we have here as well. The Gov. agencies seem to only care about the big producers. I mean they usually have enough resources to do their own research and testing yet drain money from the public funds. Here if there is a problem with disease or contamination the USDA will throw millions at it to keep the company going but in my opinion if they work that shodily they should be shut.

Since the economic crisis and recalls on foodstuffs here lately the price of poultry has really went up. Laying hens $20.00 and roosters for up to $12.00 just so people can say that they know where their food comes from. All across the US people are getting laws changed in town after town to allow the keeping of poultry. Gardens are replacing sections of yards too which is a good thing.

Later on in the year look for the price of anything made with wheat to go up or be in short supply. A late winter freeze killed a lot of the wheat through Oklahoma, Texas and points South and East. As far East as Georgia.

Friend of mine in Missouri was let go and is struggling to hold onto his house. Anyway his answer has been to chop up the garden into allotments and rent them out. It's not a lot but it's helping.

Thanks for the heads up on wheat..
