Supporting cucumber plants
« on: April 29, 2009, 20:05 »
My cucumbers are in the greenhouse and are growing well at the moment.  A couple of them have tiny flower buds on them and I am very excited!

The problem I have at the moment is how to support them.  They are currently in 7" pots and I have grow bags and larger supermarket flower buckets for them to go into.  One of them has a tendril already open so that suggests it needs some support.  Shall I use cane, net or string or something else?

Help gratefully appreciated as this is my job for tomorrow morning!

I just run a piece of pea and bean netting up the end wall of mine and let them get on with it :)

if you can get a bit of net with 4"-6" holes in then this is ideal,
if you have a aliminium g/house then you can get little plastic yokes that twist into the slot where the bolts go,these are ideal for fixing net r string to the inside.
feed the soil not the plants

I have a new aluminium greenhouse & I've realised there's nothing to hang string from - these yoke things sound ideal.  Mind if I ask where you get them from?

Excellent, thanks guys.  I have some netting so will use that then.

One other quick Q - how tall do they grow?!!

Honestly!  I am amazed.  This is one of the things I absolutely love about growing veg, it gives me a real idea of where they come from and how they grow.  Last year I got my plot in July and ordered a couple of cucumbers from e-bay.  Mine are already bigger than the ones they supplied!  I also had no idea that they needed supporting and they lay on the floor.  We got one cucumber and we were so excited.  Each member of the family had a slice!!  Hopefully we will get a bit more than that this year!
