First radish
« on: April 29, 2009, 12:17 »
I have just eaten the first radish I have ever grown, it was delicious, didn't even think I liked radishes.  Its a small thing I know (well radishes generally are!) but it has made my day.

they taste much nicer when they are smaller, don't let them get too big which they will do pretty quick or they'll get woody  :)

How big do you pick em?  I haven't thinned mine and sowing was done by a 3 yr old so they are cramped and about thickness of a chunky finger, how long until picking time?  They are french breakfast I think

Mine don't get too woody - if I don't pick them quick enough the slugs and snails do it for me. :D  >:(

Haven't grown french breakfast for a while but that sounds about right to me - they're supposed to be sort of elliptical rather than round, I think.  Maybe about the length of a small finger and the width of a thumb, or something like that.  You could leave a few to get a bit bigger while you're sowing more, to find the optimum size, but I wouldn't leave them all too much longer.

I had a few last year escape and get to nearly tennis ball size, and they were still tender, maybe from all the rain, but my god! they were hot!  If I ever need mustard oil I know where I'll be starting from!

Just gently pull out the ones that are actually touching each other. If you water them first this is easy. They sounds ready to me!!! Yum yum
